Social media statistics for 2026: 5.81 billion users, 19 hours a week, 6.66 platforms a month, Facebook 3.07B, Meta 3.6B daily users, 84% of US adults on YouTube, $339B ad spend — 50+ sourced stats.

Social media is no longer one corner of the internet — it is where most of the world spends its online life. In 2026, close to seven in ten people on Earth use social media every month, and the typical user juggles half a dozen platforms while spending well over two hours a day scrolling, messaging and watching. This page collects the most useful social media statistics for 2026: how many people use it, how long they spend, which platforms dominate, how Americans and teenagers differ from the global picture, and what social media means for advertisers and marketers. Every figure carries the name of the research firm, survey or report that published it, so you can cite it with confidence.

Key social media statistics at a glance

  • 5.81 billion social media user identities worldwide at the start of October 2026, close to 7 in 10 people on Earth (DataReportal).
  • 94.5% of the world's internet users use social media each month (DataReportal).

  • Short-form video is the top content format for ROI, named by 49% of marketers (HubSpot).

How many people use social media?

The headline number keeps climbing, but it needs one important caveat: DataReportal counts "user identities", not unique people, because one person with accounts on four platforms counts four times. With that understood, there were 5.81 billion social media user identities around the world at the start of October 2026, and 5.79 billion in April 2026 — equal to 69.9% of the world's population (DataReportal). The April figure was up 294 million identities, or 5.4%, in a year, and by October the year-on-year gain was 151 million new identities, or 2.7% — about 4.8 new users every second (DataReportal). Growth is slowing as the market matures, and DataReportal links part of the slowdown to Meta removing a meaningful number of accounts from Facebook and Instagram.

Penetration is now near-universal among people who are online at all. 94.5% of the world's internet users use social media each month, and adult social media identities now equal 94.6% of the global adult population aged 18 and over (DataReportal). GWI's survey of internet users aged 16 and above in 53 of the world's largest economies found that 97.1% already use at least one social network or messaging platform each month (GWI, via DataReportal). In the United States, DataReportal counts about 253 million social media user identities, while South Korea leads the world on penetration at 94.7% (DataReportal).

How much time does social media take?

Time spent is still rising even as account growth slows. GWI's data, reported by DataReportal, puts the typical user's week at 19 hours 18 minutes on social media and video platforms — 42 minutes more than a year earlier (GWI, via DataReportal). That works out to an average of 2 hours 21 minutes a day, down slightly from the 2023 peak of 2 hours 31 minutes (DataReportal). Americans spend a little less than the global average at 2 hours 9 minutes a day (DataReportal). Added together, the world spends more than 16 billion hours consuming content on social platforms every day — the equivalent of more than 1.8 million years of human existence (DataReportal).

The heaviest users are young women: women aged 16 to 24 spend 25 hours 45 minutes a week on social media — more than three and a half hours a day — while even users aged 65 and over average more than an hour a day (DataReportal). By country, the Philippines leads on time spent at more than 36 hours a week, and Brazil averages 3 hours 44 minutes a day (DataReportal). Almost all of it happens on the phone: 96.2% of global users access social media via smartphones, and 98.5% of Facebook traffic comes from mobile devices (DataReportal).

Social media in the United States

Pew Research Center's 2025 survey of 5,022 US adults found that 84% of Americans use YouTube and 71% use Facebook, the two most-used platforms in the country. Half of adults (50%) use Instagram, the only other platform to reach half of Americans, followed by TikTok at 37%, WhatsApp at 32%, Reddit at 26%, Snapchat at 25%, X at 21%, Threads at 8%, Bluesky at 4% and Truth Social at 3% (Pew Research Center, 2025). Four platforms have grown steadily since 2021: TikTok rose from 21% to 37%, Instagram from 40% to 50%, WhatsApp from 23% to 32% and Reddit from 18% to 26% (Pew Research Center).

The age gaps are stark. 80% of adults aged 18–29 use Instagram, against just 19% of adults 65 and older, and 63% of 18–29-year-olds use TikTok, against 12% of those 65 and over (Pew Research Center). Short video, shopping and the money

Short-form video is where attention concentrates. YouTube Shorts now average more than 200 billion views a day (YouTube CEO's 2026 letter), and TikTok's Android users average 1 hour 37 minutes a day in the app (DataReportal). TikTok's audience skews young: 35.3% of TikTok users are aged 25–34, while 31.7% of Instagram users are aged 18–24 and 70% of Pinterest users are women (DataReportal; GWI). Engagement follows the short clip: TikTok averages about 5.3% engagement per post, against 1.8% on Instagram and 0.9% on Facebook (industry benchmarks cited by Web2AI, 2026).

The money follows the attention. Statista's Digital Market Outlook projects worldwide social media ad spending of $338.75 billion in 2026, rising to $530.34 billion by 2030 — an 11.86% compound annual growth rate (Statista). In the US, social media advertising revenue reached $117.7 billion in 2025, up 32.6% on the year (IAB/PwC). Meta reported $59.36 billion in advertising revenue in Q2 2026 alone, up 27% year over year, with ad impressions up 14% and the average price per ad up 12% (Meta, Q2 2026 results). YouTube's advertising revenue reached $40.37 billion in 2025, up from $36.15 billion in 2024 (Alphabet). Social commerce is the next frontier: US social commerce sales passed $85 billion in 2025 and are on track to pass $100 billion in 2026 (eMarketer).

What marketers do with social media

For marketers, social media is now the default channel. 70% of marketers use Instagram, making it the most-used platform among marketers (HubSpot), and short-form video is the number-one content format for ROI, named by 49% of marketers (HubSpot). AI is now part of the workflow: 89.7% of marketers use AI several times a week, and 71.1% of teams report time savings from AI tools (SQ Magazine, 2026). And the audience is receptive: more than 30% of adult internet users say social media ads help them discover new brands, products and services, making social the third-largest brand-awareness source after search engines and TV ads (GWI, via XtendedView).

The practical takeaway from all of this is simple: the audience is enormous, fragmented across half a dozen apps, and reachable mostly on a phone in short bursts. Brands that win in 2026 lead with short video, design for silent mobile viewing, and meet each platform's audience where it already is.
