How to Use Telegram: The Beginner's Guide (First Chat, Channels, Groups, and Staying Safe)

Telegram is free, fast, and used by over a billion people — but its best features hide behind menus. This beginner's guide walks you through setup, your first chat, groups and channels, secret chats, bots, and the safety settings that matter.
Learning how to use Telegram takes about ten minutes, and most of that time is just waiting for the verification code to arrive. Telegram is a free messaging app with over 1 billion active users, according to Telegram's own FAQ, and it works on your phone, tablet, and computer at the same time. Your chats sync across every device, you can send files up to 2 GB each without paying, and groups can hold up to 200,000 people.
If you are switching from another messenger, the biggest difference is the cloud. Unlike WhatsApp Web, which mirrors a phone, Telegram keeps your messages in its cloud, so you can open the same conversation on a laptop that has never met your phone. This guide walks you through the whole system in plain English: creating an account, sending your first message, joining groups and channels, using secret chats, trying bots, and turning on the safety settings that matter.
How do you use Telegram for the first time?
Using Telegram for the first time means installing the app, verifying your phone number, setting up your profile, and sending your first message. The whole process takes about ten minutes, and you do not need a username or a paid plan to start chatting.
- Install Telegram from the App Store, Google Play, or telegram.org, and open it.
- Enter your mobile phone number. Telegram sends a verification code by SMS or phone call.
- Type in the code, then add your name and an optional profile photo.
- Pick a username so people can find you without seeing your phone number.
- Tap the pencil icon, choose a contact or search for a username, and send your first message.
- Open Settings and turn on 2-Step Verification before you do anything else.
What is Telegram?
Telegram is a messaging app with a focus on speed and security, in its own words. It launched for iPhone on August 14, 2013, with Android following two months later, and it has grown into one of the top five most downloaded apps in the world. The app is free, with no ads in private chats, and a paid Premium subscription that adds higher limits and extra features without taking anything away from free users.
Three ideas explain most of Telegram. First, it is cloud-based, so your messages, photos, and files live in Telegram's cloud and appear on every device you sign in to. Second, it is built for large audiences: groups hold up to 200,000 members and channels can broadcast to unlimited subscribers. Third, it is open: the apps and the Bot API are open for developers, which is why Telegram has bots for almost everything, from reminders to payments.
Telegram is not the same as a fully private messenger. Regular chats are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers and stored in the Telegram cloud, which is what makes the syncing work. Only secret chats use end-to-end encryption, where nobody but you and the other person can read the messages, including Telegram itself. That distinction matters, and this guide states it plainly wherever it counts.
How to create a Telegram account
Creating a Telegram account starts with a phone number, and there is no way around that step. Telegram uses the number to verify you and to find people you already know, but you can hide it from everyone afterwards. Here is the full setup, in order.
Download the app for your device. Telegram has apps for iOS (13.0 and above) and Android (5.0 and up), a native macOS app, a desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and Telegram Web for any browser. Install it, open it, and tap Start Messaging. Enter your country and phone number, then enter the code Telegram texts or calls you with. If the code does not arrive, you can request it by phone call from the same screen.
Next, add your first and last name. Both are optional in the sense that you can use any display name, but a real first name helps your contacts recognize you. Add a profile photo if you like; you can change it any time from Settings. Then pick a username under Settings, in the format @yourname. Your username is how strangers can message you without seeing your phone number, and it gives you a public link at t.me/yourname.
The last setup step is the one most beginners skip, and it is the most important. Open Settings, then Privacy and Security, and decide who can see your phone number, your last seen time, and your profile photo. Set phone number visibility to My Contacts or Nobody, not Everybody. If you set it to Nobody, people who have your number saved still see it only if you allow it through the exception list. While you are there, turn on 2-Step Verification, which adds a password on top of the SMS code. Our two-factor authentication guide explains the backup-code habit that makes this safe.
How to send your first message on Telegram
Sending your first message is the easy part. Tap the pencil icon (on iPhone, the compose icon at the top right) and pick a contact, or type a name or @username into the search bar. Telegram shows people from your phone contacts who already use the app, and anyone with a public username. Type your message and send it. That is the whole mechanic; everything else is a variation on it.
A few habits make Telegram feel natural fast. Saved Messages is your own private chat: send yourself notes, links, and files there and they sync to every device, which makes it the fastest way to move a file from your phone to your computer. You can edit a sent message by tapping and holding it, and delete it for both sides the same way. Voice messages are recorded by holding the microphone icon, and voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted, according to Telegram's FAQ.
Check marks tell you where a message stands. One check means the message reached Telegram's servers; two checks mean the other person has seen it in a private chat. In groups, the second check appears once the message has been read by at least one member. If someone has hidden their last seen status, you will not see the usual online and last seen lines either; that is the privacy setting working as designed, not a bug.
Telegram groups vs channels: which one do you need?
Groups and channels look similar in the chat list, but they do opposite jobs. A group is a conversation: everyone can talk, reply, and react. A channel is a broadcast: only admins post, and everyone else reads. Picking the wrong one is the most common beginner mistake, so here is the difference in one table.
| Group | Channel | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can talk | Every member | Admins only |
| How big | Up to 200,000 members | Unlimited subscribers |
| Best for | Friends, family, teams, communities | News, updates, creators, announcements |
| Joining | Invite link or added by a member | Search and tap Join, or follow a link |
| Privacy | Public or private | Public or private |
To create a group, tap the pencil icon, choose New Group, add members from your contacts, and name it. You can appoint admins, set member permissions, and turn on slow mode if a busy group gets noisy. To join a channel, tap the search bar, type the channel name or topic, and tap Join on its page. Public channels have a t.me link you can open in any browser; private channels only open through an invite link.
If you are choosing a messaging app for a community rather than a workplace, Discord organizes the same idea differently, with servers split into text and voice channels, while Slack is built around work teams. Telegram groups sit between the two: simpler than Discord, more social than Slack, and free at a scale neither of them matches without a paid plan.
What is a Telegram secret chat?
A Telegram secret chat is a one-to-one conversation with end-to-end encryption, which means only you and the other person can read the messages. Telegram states this directly in its FAQ: all messages in secret chats use end-to-end encryption, messages cannot be forwarded from secret chats, and deleting a message on your side orders the other side's app to delete it too. Secret chats are device-specific and are not part of the Telegram cloud, so you can only read them on the device where they were created.
To start one, open the person's profile, tap the three-dot menu, and choose Start Secret Chat. Inside a secret chat you can set a self-destruct timer, which deletes messages a set time after they are read. The timer only applies to messages sent after you set it. Telegram also tries to alert you if the other person takes a screenshot, though it warns that this cannot be guaranteed on every device, especially some Android phones.
Use secret chats for anything you would not want stored anywhere else: passwords, financial details, medical information, or anything sensitive. Use regular cloud chats for everything else, because they are the ones that sync, back up, and survive a lost phone. Two things to remember: if you log out, you lose all your secret chats on that device, and secret chats do not work in groups. If you want the same kind of protection on other accounts, passkeys are the modern replacement for SMS codes on the services that support them.
What are Telegram bots?
Telegram bots are automated accounts that do things inside a chat: answer questions, send reminders, run polls, translate messages, or connect to an outside service. You talk to a bot the same way you talk to a person, by opening its chat and typing commands or tapping buttons. Developers create bots through @BotFather, Telegram's own bot for making bots, and the Bot API is open to anyone.
Finding a useful bot starts with search. Tap the search bar and type what you need, such as a reminder bot or a file converter, and check the bot's description and username before you start it. Legitimate bots never ask for your Telegram password, your SMS verification code, or your 2-Step Verification password. If a bot asks for any of those, leave the chat and report it.
Bots are also how many scams arrive. A common one is a bot that promises free Premium, free cryptocurrency, or a prize, then asks you to connect a wallet or pay a small fee to unlock it. Telegram never gives away Premium through a bot, and no stranger's bot can unlock features Telegram charges for. Treat any bot that asks for money, a code, or a wallet connection as a scam, and use the Report button in the chat to flag it.
How to use Telegram on desktop and web
Telegram on desktop is the same account, not a second one. Download Telegram Desktop for Windows, macOS, or Linux from desktop.telegram.org, or use the native macOS app, or open Telegram Web in any browser. Sign in with the same phone number you used on your phone, enter the code Telegram sends to your Telegram app, and your cloud chats appear instantly. You can be signed in on as many devices as you like at the same time.
Desktop is where Telegram's cloud design pays off. Drag a file into any chat and it uploads to the cloud, so you can open it on your phone later without ever plugging in a cable. Saved Messages becomes a personal clipboard between your computer and your phone. Desktop also has the full feature set: groups, channels, bots, voice and video calls, and secret chats on the macOS app, which Telegram notes includes every feature from the iOS version.
One warning applies on shared computers. Telegram stays signed in until you log out, so always log out on a computer you do not own. Remember that logging out deletes your secret chats on that device, while your cloud messages stay safe and return when you sign in again. If you ever lose a device, open Settings, then Devices, and end the session from your phone.
Is Telegram Premium worth it?
Telegram Premium is a monthly subscription that raises Telegram's limits and adds convenience features. It launched in 2022, priced at $4.99 a month in the US, according to TechCrunch's launch coverage, and later reporting puts the price at $4.99 to $5.99 depending on region and platform. Telegram shows the exact price inside the app when you subscribe, so treat any number you read online as a guide, not a quote.
The free version is generous enough that most people never need Premium. The table below compares the limits that matter, using Telegram's Premium FAQ and a 2026 Premium guide as the sources.
| Free | Premium | |
|---|---|---|
| File upload size | 2 GB per file | 4 GB per file |
| Download speed | Capped | Fastest available |
| Channels you can join | Up to 500 | Up to 1,000 |
| Pinned chats | Up to 5 | Up to 10 |
| Chat folders | Up to 10 folders, 100 chats each | Up to 20 folders, 200 chats each |
| Voice-to-text | Not included | Unlimited transcription |
| Ads in large public channels | Sponsored messages shown | No ads |
Premium is worth it if you hit one of those limits every week: you send files bigger than 2 GB, you follow more than 500 channels, or you read long voice messages and want them transcribed. It is not worth it for ordinary chatting, because free Telegram already includes unlimited cloud storage, every chat feature, and the full app on every device. One detail that surprises people: a free user can download a 4 GB file a Premium user sent them. Only the sender needs Premium to upload above the free limit.
How to stay safe on Telegram
Telegram is safe to use with the defaults, and much safer with five minutes of settings. Start with 2-Step Verification in Settings, then Privacy and Security. A strong password there means a stolen SIM alone cannot open your account. Add a recovery email so you can get back in if you forget the password, and set your phone number visibility to My Contacts or Nobody.
Next, learn the scams, because Telegram's open groups are where they spread. The most common is impersonation: an account copies a friend's or a celebrity's name and photo, then asks for money or a code. Telegram's own advice is to contact @NoToScam if someone is pretending to be you. Other common scams are fake giveaways, fake support accounts that ask for your verification code, and links that promise Premium or crypto and lead to a login page that steals your number. Telegram staff will never ask for your code or your 2-Step Verification password.
Three rules cover almost everything. First, never share a Telegram login code with anyone, for any reason; the code is the key to your account. Second, never click a link in a group you do not trust without checking it first, and our guide on how to check if a website is safe shows the checks that take thirty seconds. Third, report anything suspicious with the Report button on the message, which sends it to Telegram's moderators in a few taps. Public groups also have admins, and a well-run group bans scammers fast, so prefer groups with active admins and real pinned rules.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a phone number to use Telegram?
Yes. Telegram requires a mobile phone number to create an account, and it sends a verification code by SMS or phone call. You can hide the number from everyone after setup by choosing a username, so people can message you at @yourname without ever seeing your number.
Is Telegram free?
Yes, Telegram's core features are free: messaging, calls, groups, channels, bots, and unlimited cloud storage cost nothing. Telegram Premium is an optional subscription, about $5 a month in the US, that raises file and channel limits and adds features such as voice-to-text transcription.
Is Telegram private?
Only partly, and the distinction matters. Regular chats are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers and stored in the Telegram cloud so they sync across devices. Only secret chats use end-to-end encryption, where nobody but you and the other person can read the messages. Use secret chats for anything truly sensitive.
Can I use Telegram on my computer?
Yes. Telegram has desktop apps for Windows, macOS, and Linux, plus Telegram Web for any browser. Sign in with the same phone number and your cloud chats sync instantly. You can stay signed in on your phone and computer at the same time.
How do I delete my Telegram account?
You can delete your account from Settings under Edit Profile, or through Telegram's account-deactivation page. Deleting removes your messages, groups, and contacts from Telegram. Remember that logging out alone already deletes your secret chats on that device, so export anything you need before you delete or log out.
