How to Use Meta AI: The Beginner's Guide (WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and the Muse Agent)

Meta AI is the free AI assistant built into the apps most people already open every day, and learning how to use Meta AI takes about two minutes: tap the Meta AI icon in WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger or Facebook, or open meta.ai in a browser, then type or say your question. There is nothing to install for most people, and no separate account is needed beyond the Meta account you already have. This guide walks through every place Meta AI lives, the three modes that change how it answers, voice and photo questions, image generation, and the newer Muse agent that can do tasks for you in the background — plus the two privacy settings you should check before you use it much. If you are new to WhatsApp itself, start with our WhatsApp Web beginner guide first; the Meta AI steps below assume you can already open a chat.

How do I use Meta AI?

Meta AI is Meta's free AI assistant, available in WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook, in the standalone Meta AI app, and on the web at meta.ai. It answers questions, writes and edits text, generates images, reads photos, helps with shopping and runs research — and it is powered by Muse Spark, Meta's own model family. You do not need a separate account: Meta says your existing Meta account is enough.

  1. Pick your door. On your phone, open WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger or Facebook and tap the Meta AI icon, or download the Meta AI app. On a computer, go to meta.ai.
  2. Start a chat. In the Meta AI app, tap "Ask Meta AI" at the bottom and type your prompt. Inside WhatsApp or Instagram, tap the Meta AI icon or start a new chat with Meta AI.
  3. Pick a mode. In the Meta AI app, tap the mode shown at the bottom right and choose Instant for quick answers, Thinking for harder questions, or Shopping for buying help.
  4. Send it and check the answer. Meta AI replies in the chat. Meta warns that AI responses may be inaccurate, so treat anything important as a draft to verify, not a final answer.
  5. Talk or show instead of typing. Tap the microphone for a voice chat, or tap the camera option to ask about a photo — Meta's examples are "What breed of cat is this?" and "Where can I find this hat?"

Where can you use Meta AI?

Meta AI is not one app. It is the same assistant surfaced in several places, and the right door depends on where you already spend time. Availability varies by country and region, and Meta says some features may not have reached your area even if others in your country have them.

WhereHow to open itBest for
WhatsAppTap the Meta AI icon, or start a new chat with Meta AI; type @MetaAI in a group chatQuick questions without leaving a chat; voice conversations

On Instagram, Meta's help page notes the feature is not available on computers — use the phone app. And if you use several Meta apps, the assistant is the same one everywhere; your conversation history follows your Meta account, not the app you opened.

How to use Meta AI on WhatsApp

WhatsApp is where most people meet Meta AI first, because it is already open. Tap the Meta AI icon at the top of your chats, or start a new chat with Meta AI, then type your question as you would message a person. In a group chat, type @MetaAI followed by your question and the assistant answers in the group.

WhatsApp adds two extras the other doors do not have in the same form. First, voice: you can have a spoken conversation with Meta AI. It replies with voice and text, and you will see a transcript in the chat. You need to give WhatsApp access to your microphone. WhatsApp lists the supported voice languages as English, Arabic, Bengali, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai and Vietnamese. Second, writing help: Meta AI can suggest ways to draft, edit or rephrase a message in different tones before you send it. That uses a feature called Private Processing, which you turn on in Settings under Private Processing features. WhatsApp lists English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish for writing help.

One thing to understand before you use it in WhatsApp: your personal messages stay end-to-end encrypted, but when you choose to interact with Meta AI, Meta receives your prompts to generate responses and improve its AI, and you can delete those interactions. In other words, the chat with Meta AI is not the same as a private chat with a friend — treat it as a conversation with Meta, not a sealed envelope.

How to use Meta AI on Instagram

On Instagram, tap the Meta AI icon in your DMs, or use it from search, and ask your question. You can ask about something you just saw — the assistant can read a photo you share with it and answer questions about it, suggest a caption, or turn an idea into an image. Meta has also put Muse, its newer personal agent, directly on Instagram's share button: instead of opening a separate chatbot, you can share a post or reel to Muse and ask about it, get a summary, or route the share through the assistant.

The Instagram door is the one with the biggest privacy catch, and it is covered in the privacy section below: since July 7, 2026, Meta's Muse Image model can use photos from public Instagram accounts as visual references when someone @-mentions that account in a prompt. If your account is public, check the opt-out steps before you decide the assistant is harmless.

How to use the Meta AI app and meta.ai

The standalone Meta AI app and the meta.ai website are where Meta AI is most capable, because they carry the modes, the voice chat, the camera and the image tools in one place. The steps are the same in both: open the app or the site, tap "Ask Meta AI" at the bottom, type your prompt, and send it.

The modes are the control most beginners miss. Changing the mode changes how Meta AI answers, and Meta's help page lists three of them.

ModeWhat it doesUse it when
InstantGenerates quicker responsesEveryday questions: definitions, quick facts, short drafts
ThinkingGenerates in-depth responses for more complex questions or reasoningPlanning, comparing options, working through a problem step by step
ShoppingA dedicated shopping concierge based on your interests and promptFinding and comparing products to buy

To change modes, tap the current mode in the bottom right of the Meta AI app and tap the one you want. If your first answer is too shallow, switching to Thinking and asking again is usually the fix — not rewording the same question three times in Instant.

Voice works in the app too. Tap the microphone icon before sending a prompt to start a voice chat; say "Hang up" or "I'm done" to end it, and allow the app access to your microphone. While you are voice chatting, you can keep talking in the background while you use other apps, and your device will show that the microphone is in use. You can also connect your camera during a voice chat and ask about what you are seeing around you. And you can ask about a photo by tapping the camera option, then taking a picture or choosing one from your photo library, then typing or speaking your question.

How to generate images with Meta AI (Imagine)

Image generation — Meta calls the feature Imagine — is one of the most-used parts of Meta AI, and it works the same way everywhere: describe the image you want in words, and Meta AI generates it. In the Meta AI app, type a prompt like "a watercolor poster of a farmers market at sunrise" and ask for variations if the first one is not right. You can also upload a photo and ask Meta AI to transform it — the prompt guides for portraits all start with a transform instruction plus an identity lock, a line that tells the model to keep the person's facial features exactly the same, because without it the result can drift into a stranger's face.

Two honest limits. First, image generation is one of the more compute-heavy features, and Meta says it has started testing usage limits on some of its more demanding features — if you hit a daily or monthly limit, you will be offered a subscription for more use before the free limit resets. Second, the likeness rules changed in 2026, and they are the subject of the next-but-one section: who can generate images of you is now a setting you control, and the default is not the most private one.

What is Muse, Meta's personal AI agent?

Muse is the new layer on top of Meta AI, and it is a different kind of tool. Meta launched it on September 8, 2026, calling it a personal AI agent — not a chatbot. The difference is what it is allowed to do. Meta AI answers a question and stops. Muse plans, uses tools and acts over many steps: it can send emails, fill out online forms, book travel, negotiate prices, manage bills and complete purchases, and it keeps working in the background after you close the app. That is why it is described as agentic AI rather than a chat assistant.

Here is how to start with Muse. Download the Muse app on iOS or Android, or go to muse.ai in your browser — Meta confirms both routes, and there is no native Windows app, so on a Windows PC you use the browser. You must be 18 or older, and the rollout started in the United States, reaching Canada on September 18, 2026. Tell Muse which apps it may access — email, calendar, shopping — and approve only the permissions you are comfortable with. Then type or speak your first goal in plain words, the way you would message a person. Meta says talking to Muse works just like messaging another person, including inside WhatsApp, where it is integrated alongside Meta AI. Muse asks before sending emails or spending money, and you can see everything it has done in an audit trail. According to Meta, Muse runs in a dedicated virtual machine, and conversations and data in the Muse environment are not shared with its advertising systems.

On September 29, 2026, Meta announced Muse for Small Business, which adds connectors for Asana, Slack, Shopify, Notion, Zoom, Stripe, QuickBooks, Canva, Dropbox, Figma and more, so the agent can work with a business's Instagram and ad accounts. For a beginner, the practical distinction is simple: use Meta AI when you want an answer, and use Muse when you want something done — a trip watched, a price tracked, a form filled — and you are willing to give an agent permission to act in your accounts. If that last clause makes you uneasy, that instinct is the right one, and the privacy section below is where to spend your time.

Is Meta AI free?

Yes, for everyday use. Meta says Meta AI is free to use for everyday use, and you do not need a subscription or a credit card to start. The honest footnote is that Meta has started testing usage limits on some of its more compute-intensive features, such as image and video generation. When people hit their daily or monthly limit, they will have the option to purchase a subscription to unlock more usage before the free limit resets. Meta has not published the subscription prices on its Muse subscriptions page, so treat any price you see in a third-party article as unverified until Meta documents it. For comparison with the other free assistants, our ChatGPT beginner guide and Google Gemini beginner guide cover what those two charge for and what stays free.

What Meta AI does with your chats — and the two privacy settings to check

Meta is unusually direct about this in its own help pages, so there is no need to guess. Meta uses your interactions with its AIs to improve AI at Meta. If Meta AI cannot answer your query, Meta says it shares the messages you send to the AI, plus general information such as your region, with select partners to get you better results. Meta AI uses your location and information from your profile — your age, gender and interests based on your activity — to personalise its answers. And Meta warns that AI responses may be inaccurate or inappropriate and should not be used to make important decisions. The practical rule follows from that: keep customer details, prices you have not announced and anything confidential out of it.

There are two separate settings to check, and they control different things. The first is your likeness permission, inside the Meta AI app: tap Menu, tap your profile picture in the lower right, tap "Your likeness", then choose who can add you to media. The four options Meta lists are Only me (only you can create images and videos of yourself), Followers I approve (select specific followers, and you must both already follow each other), Followers I follow back (anyone you follow can add you to media, as long as you follow them back), and Everyone (anyone on the Meta AI or Vibes app can create images and videos of you). You may not see all options depending on your age or country. If you set this to Only me, nobody else can generate images of you through that permission path.

The second is the Muse Image setting on Instagram, and it works differently. On July 7, 2026, Meta launched Muse Image, its first in-house image model, and folded it into Instagram so that anyone can @-mention a public Instagram account inside a prompt and have Muse Image use that account's photos as visual references to generate new images featuring that person's likeness. Public accounts are opted in by default; private accounts are not. Meta's own help page says you will not be notified about content created using AI features at Meta, so someone could generate an image from your photos and you would never know. To opt out while keeping your account public, open Instagram, go to Settings, then "How others can interact with you", then "Sharing and reuse", and switch off the Posts and Reels toggles under "Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta". Two honest limits: opting out only prevents future images — any AI images already created with your photos will not be deleted — and the only protection that covers everything is switching your account to private. Set the likeness permission to Only me first; it takes thirty seconds, and it is the control most people actually want.

Why can't I see Meta AI?

The most common reason is availability. Meta says the Meta AI and Vibes apps and websites are not yet available everywhere, and some features may not have reached your area even if others in your country can use them. On Instagram, the feature is not available on computers at all. If a friend has it and you do not, update the app first — the setting to turn features off may not appear on an old version — then check whether the Meta AI icon appears in WhatsApp or Instagram after the update. If it still does not appear, your region or account simply may not have the rollout yet, and no setting on your phone will force it. Do not download a third-party "Meta AI" app from outside the official stores to work around it; the real assistant lives inside Meta's own apps and at meta.ai.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate account for Meta AI?

No. Meta says no separate account is needed beyond your existing Meta account. You can use it at meta.ai, in the Meta AI app, or inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook, and your conversation history follows that account.

Is Meta AI free?

Yes, for everyday use. Meta says it is free, with no subscription or credit card needed to start. Meta has started testing daily or monthly usage limits on some of its more compute-intensive features, such as image generation, and offers a subscription for more use when you hit a limit.

What is the difference between Instant and Thinking in Meta AI?

Instant gives quicker responses for everyday questions. Thinking gives in-depth responses for more complex questions or reasoning. Shopping is a third mode: a dedicated shopping concierge based on your interests and prompt. Change modes by tapping the current mode at the bottom right of the Meta AI app.

Can I talk to Meta AI with my voice on WhatsApp?

Yes, if voice is available to you. WhatsApp needs microphone permission, and Meta AI replies with voice and text, with a transcript in the chat. WhatsApp lists twelve supported voice languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Hindi and Indonesian.

How do I stop other people from making AI images of me?

Two settings. In the Meta AI app, go to Menu, tap your profile picture, tap "Your likeness" and choose "Only me" — then only you can create images and videos of yourself. On Instagram, go to Settings, then "How others can interact with you", then "Sharing and reuse", and switch off the Posts and Reels toggles. Opting out only prevents future images; ones already made will not be deleted, and going private is the only complete protection.
